The Principles of Infection Prevention and Control

This unit looks at national and local policies in relation to infection control including  employer and employee responsibilities.  It will help learners to understand

  • How procedures and risk assessment can help minimise the risk of an outbreak of infection.
  • How to use PPE correctly and the importance of personal hygiene.
  • How to deal with potential hazards and risks to health presented by infections in a variety of work place settings.

Unit 2 Causes and Spread of Infection

Understanding the causes and spread of infection is an essential tool in infection prevention and control. This unit looks at

  • The causes of infection and common illnesses which may result from the spread of infection.
  • The differences between infection, colonisation, pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms, the areas of infection and the types caused by different organisms.
  • Methods of transmission, the conditions needed for organisms to grow, the ways infection enters the body and key factors that may lead to infection occurring.

Unit 3 Cleaning, Decontamination and Waste Management

A clean environment is essential to providing a good standard of service whatever the setting. This unit looks at

  •  the correct way of maintaining a clean environment in accordance with national policies.
  • The procedures to follow to decontaminate an area from infection
  • Good practice when dealing with waste materials

  • Provide the assessor with opportunities to observe their working practices, to assess that they know how to put their knowledge into practice.
